“Computer technology at the time was very limited. We developed this tool at a time when almost everyone in our industry was still using pencils and vellum.”
Idletime Networks and Universal Studios had developed designs for elements of regional theme parks. We were tasked with finding a way to rapidly prototype an entire theme park using the elements previously designed once a potential site and demographic were identified. We developed guidelines to govern design standards, made 3-dimensional computer models of all the elements, and developed the technology to bring them all together and navigate this virtual theme park. We developed a hardware, software, and procedural system to allow a visual approach to the design. Subsequently, we provided sightline studies from dozens of locations in the virtual park and even produced a series of architectural renderings to highlight the project.
- Renderings, like this one by AST, help designers visualize a project before breaking ground.
- AST worked with Idletime Network to develop a process of theme park design that allows for adjustable layouts to accommodate specific geographical needs.
- Night scenes like this show where shadows might become aspects of the park design.
- We embraced emerging technology in the early 90s, and we learned its value early in our history.
